ACT Minister working with NACRO

Chief Minister within the ACT government Katy Gallagher called a meeting with NACRO and charitable recyclers to develop a program to address illegal dumping being left at charity bins. A proposal to introduce new measures around the location of charity bins and a limit will be set on the number of bins permitted will be introduced. Indeed, in its first weekend of operation, city rangers issued five fines to people caught illegally dumping. Read coverage here and here.

Lifeline warehouse destroyed by fire

A shop on Gibbon Street, Woolloongabba one of Lifelines largest earning and oldest shops in Brisbane was completely gutted by fire at the end of March. Queensland police say a fire that destroyed the store appears to be suspicious. Read coverage here, here and here.

DHL secures Sony Australia under the National TV & Computer Recycling Scheme

The logistics company DHL secured Sony Australia as its first customer under the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. With the move to digital television, Australia can expect 150,000 tonnes of additional e-waste and the recycling scheme will target an initial waste reduction of 30 per cent, increasing to 80 per cent within 10 years. The new social trend – ‘opping’

‘Opping’ is the new term coined by environmentally and socially conscious youth for the cool past-time of browsing through op shops. We can’t wait to see if it makes the list of new Australian words added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Among the 2012 additions is: boofy adj., describing big, strong men who perhaps aren’t the brightest, and alongside it bouffy adj., used of bouffant hair or puffed out sleeves on a garment, and sometimes, particularly in Australia, spelt identically as ‘boofy’.
